10 Bible Verses to Pray Over Your Child

As Christian parents, we know how important it is to pray for our children. Whether they are little or grown, boys or girls, our prayers invite God to actively work in their hearts and lives. I’ve been a mom for 35 years, raising children from newborn to adulthood, and I can tell you one thing for sure: prayer changes everything.
Our kids grow up, they make decisions about their own faith, and they decide how they will live and love. And as homeschool parents, we have the unique opportunity to shape not only their minds but their hearts as well. But no matter how many lessons we teach or values we instill, nothing compares to the power of lifting our children up in prayer. That’s why it’s important to pray faithfully and specifically for them—no matter their age.
Here are 10 verses to pray over your children:
1. Pray for Your Child to Live According to God’s Word
“Lord, help my child to live according to Your Word. Let Your Word be their guide in life, keeping them on the path of purity and truth.”
How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. Psalm 119:9 NIV
2. Pray for Your Child to Trust in God
“Lord, help my child trust You and submit to Your ways. May they always turn to You for guidance, knowing You will lead them on the right path.”
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
3. Pray for Your Child to Seek God Above All Else
“Lord, help my child seek You first in all they do. Let them know that when they live righteously, You will provide everything they need.”
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33 NLT
4. Pray for God’s Spirit to Produce Good Fruit in Your Child
“Lord, may Your Holy Spirit work in my child’s heart, producing love, joy, peace, and all the other fruits of the Spirit. Help them rely on You for strength.”
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
5. Pray for Your Child to Have a Renewed Mind
“Lord, transform my child’s mind. Help them turn away from worldly behavior and seek to know Your will for their life.”
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 NLT
6. Pray for Your Child to Be Equipped for Spiritual Battle
“Lord, may my child put on Your armor every day. Help them to stand firm in faith, knowing You’ve provided everything they need to resist the enemy.”
Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. Ephesians 6:11 NIV
7. Pray for Your Child to Be a Doer of God’s Word
“Lord, may my child not just know Your Word, but live it. Help them to be quick to act on what they learn and obey You fully.”
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22 NIV
8. Pray for God’s Guidance in Your Child’s Relationships
“Lord, guide my child in choosing friends and influences that will lead them toward You. Surround them with people who point them to Christ.”
Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. Proverbs 13:20 NLT
9. Pray for Your Child’s Future Spouse
“Lord, if it’s Your will, I pray for the spouse You will one day bring into my child’s life. May their relationship honor You, and may they seek You together.”
The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the LORD. Proverbs 18:22 NLT
10. Pray for Your Child to Experience God’s Love Deeply
“Lord, help my child to know Your love in a personal way. Let them understand how wide, long, high, and deep Your love is for them.”
And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. Ephesians 3:18 NLT
3 Steps to Make Daily Prayer a Habit
As homeschool parents, we often have a lot on our plates. Between lesson planning, chores, and daily life, prayer can sometimes take a backseat. But prayer is our lifeline to God, and it’s essential to make it a daily habit. Here are three simple steps to help you create a rhythm of prayer for your children:
1. Set a Regular Prayer Time
Find a specific time each day to pray for your children. Whether it’s early in the morning, during your quiet time, or at the end of the day, having a consistent routine will help you stay faithful in lifting them up to God.
2. Pray with Scripture
Use the verses above (or others you love) to guide your prayers. God’s Word is powerful, and when we pray Scripture over our children, we invite God’s promises into their lives in a meaningful way.
3. Create a Prayer Journal
Keep a journal where you write down specific prayers for your children. It’s encouraging to look back and see how God has answered those prayers over time. This also helps you focus on different areas where your children need God’s intervention or protection.

Aged eight, Thomas Graumann excitedly boarded a train in Prague, Czechoslovakia, to embark on what he believed was a three-month holiday. “Go to Britain, learn English, and when the Germans leave, you can come home again,” his mother assured him. Thomas carried two suitcases and a bag of food. At the time he knew his country had been taken over by the Germans and now was under Nazi control.
