Homeschool Moms: Finding Balance in Faith and Family

For many years, I found myself constantly busy, using my packed schedule to escape the worries and anxieties within me. “Time with God” became another item on my to-do list, something to check off and feel accomplished about. But the spiritual life doesn’t work that way. We can’t become better homeschool moms by following a spiritual discipline checklist. True transformation happens when we allow the Holy Spirit into every part of our hearts.

The most important item on our homeschool to-do list should be connecting with Jesus and falling deeper in love with Him. It’s not about what we do, but who we become in His presence.

Homeschool Moms: Finding Balance in Faith and Family

The Burden of Proving Ourselves

For a long time, I felt driven to prove myself to my biological father, a man I knew only by name. I believed that if I became supermodel-thin and got a book published, he would find me worthy of being his daughter. These feelings of insecurity kept me pushing forward relentlessly, never allowing myself to rest. I believed the lie that my worth was tied to my achievements.

But our heavenly Father doesn’t measure our worth by what we do. He loves us for who we are.

The Myth of Accomplishment

A full homeschool calendar made me feel accomplished, important, and valuable. But the cost was high—I was stressed, overwhelmed, and constantly tired. My shoulders bore the weight of high expectations, especially my own. I’ve noticed that many of us respond to “How are you?” with “Busy” instead of “Fine.” If we don’t have time for a bubble bath, we likely don’t have time for God either.

We can only walk out Scripture’s mandates if we make room for God to work in our hearts and lives. We need to “be still and know that He is God” (Psalm 46:10) to hear His still, small voice and understand His purposes for us.

Prioritizing Family and Faith

While trimming our commitments, my husband John and I set up a framework of priorities for our family and homeschool. Identifying our priorities and eliminating what didn’t fit helped us create a family life filled with meaning and purpose. We embraced the idea of forming before filling, inspired by the first pages of the Bible.

God formed the supportive systems necessary for life in the first three days of creation. He filled His world with plants, animals, and humankind in the last three days. This forming process taught us to build a structure for our lives before filling our schedules.

Building a Purposeful Homeschool Life

The goal isn’t just a homeschool schedule with white space but a family life flourishing with meaning and purpose. Few good things ever happen by accident. We must decide who we want to be and who we want our children to be, then create the habits that help us grow into those types of people.

Jesus wants to accomplish things in this world and won’t leave those things undone. Will we join Him in accomplishing His purposes? We must be intentional about building a life reflecting our values and faith.

What About You?

Dear homeschool moms, let’s take a moment to pause and reflect on our lives. Are we too busy nurturing our souls and connecting with God? Let’s prioritize what matters and create a family life that flourishes with meaning and purpose. Together, we can find balance in faith and family and join Jesus in accomplishing His beautiful purposes.
