Actor Nicolas Cage is starring in a new horror film. In it, he plays Joseph, Jesus's adoptive father.

The film, "The Carpenter's Son," is based on the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of Thomas and highlights the apocryphal account of Jesus' childhood, Church Leaders reported. The stories surrounding Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas, however, have long been considered bizarre and heretical due to the content behind them, such as Jesus breathing life into clay birds and causing harm to others.

Other instances in the apocryphal account include Jesus striking other children dead, one of whom died after bumping into Jesus, and causing blindness in adults who oppose Him. However, He later resurrects the children and restores the sight of others.

Cage's character of Joseph, known as "The Carpenter," is seen in the trailer looking toward the sky in anguish followed by an overhead shot of a weeping Mary, whose head is shaved and is wearing black. She is surrounded by others who are also wearing black as they are seemingly mourning together.

The trailer continues with the "Carpenter" looking toward an unknown individual, who is convulsing. Other images are shown in the trailer, including a close-up of an apparently deceased person's face beneath a shroud before jolting awake. The trailer concludes with the words "Fall 2025 AD," noting the timing of the film's theatrical release.

According to IMDb, a synopsis of the film reads "Family hiding in Roman Egypt. Son known as 'the Boy' doubts guardian 'the Carpenter', rebelling with mysterious powers. As he uses abilities, they face natural and divine horrors."

The film is written and directed by Lotfy Nathan and also stars songwriter FKA twigs as Mary, the mother of Jesus, Noah Jupe ("A Quiet Place") as the young Jesus, who is referred to in the film as "the Boy."

Other faith-based films slated for release in time for the fall include "Light of The World" (Sept. 5), which looks at life, death and resurrection of Jesus in the perspective of the Apostle John.
